Making sense of COVID-19: French fire department combating the virus with Corti

Press release

May 16, 2020

Numerous emergency medical services have begun to utilize the assistance of technology in order to handle the COVID-19 pandemic efficiently and appropriately.

In Southern France, the Departmental Fire and Emergency Service 83 (Service Départemental d’Incendie et de Secours 83), or SDIS83, has taken its first steps in a close-knit partnership with the Nordic health-tech startup, Corti, by spearheading the use of exemplary digital solutions in its daily evaluation of the pandemic in order to confront the outbreak head-on.

After hearing about the first COVID-19 cases confirmed in Europe, France quickly became one of the region’s most severely affected countries. Currently, France is ranked the sixth-highest country by the number of confirmed cases.

In heavily impacted countries like France, the fire and emergency medical services serve as the pandemic’s frontline heroes. They face the ultimate test of an already fragile system. While trying to avert non-critical cases to reach paramedics or hospitals to avoid further spread, they face a lack of the appropriate resources and sufficient information.

Covering the population of Le Var department in Southern France, the SDIS83 has now taken its first steps in a close partnership with the Nordic health-tech startup, Corti, that has rebuilt its already medically proven AI and developed several COVID-19 solutions in order to assist with fighting the virus. SDIS83 has begun using Corti’s solutions and has started carefully and rigorously mapping the COVID-19 pandemic.

Corti’s mapping system plays a vital role in how SDIS83 approaches the outbreak by assisting in analyzing and understanding the affected population.

The SDIS83 officers hold daily briefings where they discuss the pandemic’s local progression and evaluate where and how they can best combat its impact. Corti’s mapping feature allows the department to monitor the spread of the areas infected and spot the greatest vulnerabilities for cases; which allows for more precise preparedness activities to be implemented.

This means SDIS83 can more rapidly and accurately identify potential outbreak areas — especially around high-risk locations like shelters and nursing-homes — and inform medical first-responders about the infection-risk in certain areas.

Technological evolutions such as these only show us a glimpse of how technology is able to assist the healthcare industry both during their daily operations but also in more severe crises such as the current one.

This is only the beginning of the partnership between SDIS83 and Corti, where both sides see a huge potential in utilizing digital solutions in the emergency sector to ensure all healthcare professionals and patients receive the best healthcare experience possible.
